Iowa History Project ..Created by Volunteers Promoting Iowa's History, and Lost Graves & Burial Research
We'd like to take the time to give thanks to all those who hold interest in Iowa's History.
Whether it be your heritage, and those dwelling into their family history,or those looking into historical landmarks. We'd like to thank you,and hope our spreading of information, and research leads for you.pays off..no matter what you're searching for.
Our team has been working on alot of lost graves, and burial locations of those identified.Whether they be Native American,or some of the early settlers in days that have long past, and record and memory are no longer available to identify him/her.
We have so much we want to share, and will be updating the site regularly bringing you interesting facts about our historical landmarks, which is 24 by the way,tp many of the local historical places as well that our state has to offer.
We are different in many ways from the other state historical societies, with that being said."It's because we bounce around from one part of history,to another. One minute we could be talking on some of the historical artifacts that many of the museums hold dear,we could jump off on another adventure on many lost graves that are discovered every year here in the state, and our main goal is to give identity to this lost souls from long ago.
We get great pleasure helping families locating lost graves, but also helping fill in a missing puzzle piece. That goes to the history aspect as well, because we still have alot of unknowns in many of Iowa's historical events.
We're not professionals, and we do this reasearch for fun..the fun over uncovering the past.If that's not reward enough,we don't know what is..hahaha :)
Present Burial/Grave Project
We now have a pretty good size research project going on,and we're working in,and in more ways reading up for more leads on some unidentified graves in O'Brien County.
The time of burial for 2 of the graves is in 1876,and we believe these we settlers in the county,or surrounding areas,or those heading out farther west.
The grave markers are badly worn from time itself, plus poor English on what can be made out. They were burried for at least a century.
The odd thing about these two graves,is one was burried a year,or possibly 2 later, and thus giving indication the two may be related in some way.
The graves are being left as is,and the only goal at this time is identification only, and if possible to find the identity, then proceed to see if finding family members is possible.
Sioux City Lost Graves
We will be starting once again this spring,in the search for 3 lost graves here in the county.
A family wants them exhumed for burial in their family cemetery.
We will keep you posted on this, and give you details as they come in.
Historical Landmarks
A few of the volunteers will be meeting the 1st of every month/or the first Monday going over the layout, for our new historical landmarks project. We feel that so many of the landmarks, that our 24 by the way,are so overlooked by so many, just because of their description alone.
We want to change that!!
One of Iowa's most import landmarks,is the Sergeant Floyd Monument. That's Charles Floyd by the way,who was a member of the Lewis & Clark expedition, and died on the upstream voyage in 1804 and was burried here.
History makes a monument..a monument. The historical significance to so many of these landmarks on the register, needs to be inflamed in order to teach so many of today, yesterdays history.
Resources For Research
These sites offer alot more than ancestry, and family trees. They are a great resources for history as well, and many other folks such as yourself investigating history.
Linkpendium Roots Web
So keep checking back, because we have many wanting to share their research here at the chat room for women.
To contact us,please get a hold of Sandy below. She'll be more than happy to help add something here, and loves a good mystery if you hae something to share.
